Tom works as a lead researcher in the Skin Wounds and Trauma research centre in RCSI, he engages with clinicians and clinician researchers on a regular basis with a particular focus on developing and testing multimodal strategies to risk assess, treat and prevent pressure ulcers. In this regard, he is involved in guideline development and works closely with clinical colleagues in a range of settings.
As Director of Academic Affairs in RCSI School of Nursing and Midwifery, Tom leads on the delivery of wound care education in the RCSI. With a core element focusing on pressure ulcers, this is targeted at nurses and others in Ireland and further afield. They have developed education to teach MSc level in this regard and the vast majority of Tissue Viability Nurses in Ireland have been educated in RCSI. Tom is currently leading on the further development of this programme using high end technology enhanced learning methodologies. This will allow for delivery around Europe and further afield with the ultimate aim of improving care with patients with wounds and the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers.
