Before he started his academic career, Dr Nils Lahmann was trained as a first level staff nurse and worked in this profession predominantly on intensive care in acute care hospitals in England and Germany. After he finished studying nursing management in 2000 he started to work as a research fellow at the department of nursing science of the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Together with his supervisor, Professor Dr. Theo Dassen from the NL he conducted and analysed the annual national prevalence study of care problems such as falls, incontinence, nutrition and pressure ulcers. After he finished his PhD in 2006, he became and is still the leader of the study project. To date, there have been more than 80.000 hospital patients and nursing home residents examined for the study. From 2007 he participated at the postgraduate training of the Berlin School of Public Health where he received a M.Sc. in Epidemiology in 2009.
His main research interests are methodological issues of epidemiological studies in pressure ulcer risk and occurrence with the special focus on different forms of confounding. As a member of the expert group, he participated on consensus documents of certain pressure ulcers risks and dilemmas in measuring prevalence and incidence of pressure ulcers. He published several papers on pressure ulcers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Dr. Nils Lahmann became a trustee of EPUAP in 2008 and is a member of the scientific committee.
